God-damned!
Industan - 1947
(Poster on abstract visualization of Partition of India)
The poster was created to express my artistic vision of the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947. The partition was a traumatic and violent event that divided the subcontinent along religious lines, creating two new nations: India and Pakistan. The image uses symbols and colors that represent the two countries and their religions: the green crescent and star for Pakistan and Islam, and the red Om for India and Hinduism. The background is divided diagonally, suggesting a sharp contrast and separation between the two sides. The center of the image has a cross that acts like a sword that cuts through the landscape, symbolizing the bloodshed and conflict that resulted from the partition. The sword like cross, as a subtle reference to the role of the British colonial rulers, who followed Christianity, in mediating and enforcing the partition. The title “God-damned! Industan - 1947” implies a negative or critical view of the historical event, as well as a play on words with the name of the ancient river Indus, which gave rise to the civilization and culture of the region. The image is meant to evoke emotions and thoughts about the partition and its consequences, as well as to challenge the conventional narratives and perspectives on this topic.
